Rain, for a day, in LA? Okay -

The Localphiles It's grey and rainy here in Los Angeles, which is one of the only times you can really justify staying inside in this city (others include raining ash and sweltering heat waves). When the sun takes a day off here, it makes us feel like we should do the same. So we put our heads together to come up with a few laid-back, rainy-day activities (not including Justin's favorite indoor pastime--coloring books). As it turns out, rain is the perfect catalyst to really get back to your local roots. Hopefully you can adapt some of these suggestions to your own rainy city, unless of course, you're lucky enough to be poolside in Miami. Ugh.
KOREAN DAY SPA
Honestly, these hidden gems deserve a post of their own (all in good time). LA's Koreatown is a day spa Mecca. You pay a nominal entrance fee to enjoy the facilities--steam rooms, saunas, whirlpools and more--and then pay an additional, yet incredibly fair price for a body treatment, such as a massage or scrub. It's affordable luxury, and they've got everything covered. Many of them are even 24 hours! This article gives a good rundown of your options in LA.
GOLD CLASS CINEMA
The movies are great for a rainy day. Everyone loves a movie! But we seldom
have rainy days here in Los Angeles, so when we do, we should take our movie-watching experience to the next level. That's what Gold Class Cinemas is for. Located in Pasadena, these theaters come with motorized recliners as your chairs. Coupled off with a table in between and a call button for your waiter (how else will you get your popcorn, or sliders, or multiple martinis?) this is luxury movie watching at it's finest.
HOT CHOCOLATE
What? Hot chocolate isn't the first thing that jumps to mind when you think of LA? Well, we're pretty much experts on the stuff. There's no shortage of fine hot-chocolate-making. But we agree with this analysis that Intelligentsia in Silver Lake can't be beat.
INDOOR ROCK CLIMBING
Most of LA's exercise offerings are outdoors. And rightly so. BUT--if it happens
to be raining, and you find the inexplicable urge to physically exert yourself, consider Santa Monica's indoor rock climbing gym, ROCKREATION. If nothing else, it's a fun word to say. "What are you doing today, Justin?" "Well, Lindsey, I'm going to Rockreation for some recreational rock climbing of course! And I'm bringing my crayons!"
ECHO PARK'S TIME TRAVEL MART
One great place to stop on a rainy day is the Echo Park Time Travel Mart. They have Victorian iPods, Mammoth Chunks, a Knight’s helmet (just in case), robot
milk, barbarian repellant...everything you might need for travelling forward or backwards in time. The Time Travel Mart is run by local non-profit 826LA, which focuses on improving students' reading and writing in the community. When you’re there, check out the book selection. Most are written by the kids in the outreach programs. Lastly, pick up the latest McSweeney’s, grab a test tube that holds Bing Crosby’s last words and lose track of time all together. Because who needs to worry about time on a rainy day?
