National Park Week - Localphile Style

It's April 19th. You know what that means? Not the-day-after-tax-day (though that is true - I hope you got your taxes done so you can use the refund to travel!). I'm talking about the Tuesday of National Park Week! We have 394 National Parks in our country, and most people have only visited a handful. Almost all of the parks are free this week, so why not take this opportunity to explore our nation's preserved lands? It's very likely there are more than a few national parks, monuments, or historical sites within driving distance of your home (find them here). You have until sundown on Sunday.

Need a few suggestions? Well, that's what we're here for. Even if it's too late for this year, here are a few recommendations to keep in mind that emphasize the local:

1. ARCADIA NATIONAL PARK in Maine is offering several ranger-led activities throughout the week. From hikes that point out significant historical and geological offerings, to talks that focus on local people, history and legends. You'll feel like a local in no time. Plus, it's an easy day trip for all you New Englanders.

Zion National Park2. For a more physically intense experience, ZION NATIONAL PARK is your answer. It's less crowded than the Grand Canyon, and not nearly as touristy. You can also visit the charming town of Springdale, Utah. Bond with the locals at the Zion Canyon Farmers Market.

3. The GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK is a personal favorite. The low, ethereal fog is super eerie, and nearby town Gatlinburg is the perfect lunch spot before you head into the park. Discover local culture and history through park-hosted scavenger hunts this week.

4. No list of National Parks would be complete without discussing YOSEMITE. In addition to its natural splendor, Yosemite has a proud local people and a colorful history. Yosemite is really getting into the spirit for National Park week. Other than ranger led tours and talks, there are several deals to be found at surround local establishments. Stop at Cafe Charlotte for lunch, and receive a complimentary wine tasting w/ your meal (locally produced wine!).Yosemite National Park

5. Last but not least, consider Lake Powell, Arizona, also known as Glen Canyon. Not technically a national park, but the recreational lake is managed by the National Park Service, so it counts! Wahweap Marina is offering 30% off boat rentals in honor of NPW. Have some fun on the lake, then head into town for a bustling local scene.
