Reader Request: SANTA BARBARA, CA

A reader recently wrote to us about what to do and where to stay in Santa Barbara, California. We love readers and we love Santa Barbara. So this post is basically a no-brainer.

For those of you unfamiliar, Santa Barbara is a charming coastal town about 90 miles north of Los Angeles. It's so beautiful, it's almost ridiculous. If San Diego and the Mediterranean coast had a child, I think it would look a lot like Santa Barbara. There's shopping, surfing, history, food, wine, and PLENTY of local experiences. Here are a few highlights:

SLEEP  |  THE CANARY HOTEL

This adorable boutique hotel is right off the main shopping street. It's trendy and hip in all the right ways, and even has a rooftop pool.

SLEEP CHEAP  |  THE PRESIDIO MOTEL

A more affordable option, The Presidio is also centrally located downtown. The rooms are all individually decorated--all very inviting. Our three favorite perks: free internet, free bike rentals, and run by a local family.

EAT  |  BROPHY BROS.'

This is a local favorite. Eat right on the marina with beautiful views and fascinating people watching.

PLAY  |  ISLA VISTA

"IV," as the locals call it, is the "college town" of Santa Barbara. If you're looking to mingle with the under 25 crowd, head up to Embarcadero Del Norte, where there are several local eateries and shops.

HIKE  |  CAMINO CIELO

This trail leads along the crest of the Santa Ynez mountains. The locals love it for the views.

RELAX  |  BUTTERFLY BEACH

A great spot to people watch and watch the sunset.

DAY TRIP  |  CHANNEL ISLANDS

The Channel Islands aren't technically within SB, but well worth the side trip. Catch a ferry from Ventura and watch the dolphins as you make the quick trip to the islands. When you get there, snorkel, kayak, swim and more.

What else do you guys love to do in SB? Leave us more ideas in the comments. And if any of you have a destination request, email us!
